Military Personnel-Registration Renewal

If an individual has been serving in the United States military stationed or assigned to a base or other location outside the boundaries of the United States, he or she shall renew the registration for their vehicle within thirty days of their return. An individual who meets and provides proof of the following criteria shall not be charged any penalties or interest for their property tax.

One or both of the following criteria must be met:

  • The motor vehicle was stored on a military base during the time of deployment and was not operated on the public highways during that time-Provide Proof of storage or affidavit from post commander, signed and notarized, that vehicle was stored on base
  • The vehicle’s registration expired during the individual’s absence

Individuals, who are temporarily assigned to a base or other location outside the boundaries of Kentucky, can continue to register their vehicles in Kentucky so long as Kentucky will be their state of residence after their military service is completed.

The following documents are required:

  • Certificate of registration
  • Current Proof of Insurance
    • Commonwealth of Kentucky proof of insurance with the insurance company’s five-digit NAIC number listed on the card. The effective date of card cannot be greater than 45 days of the date transaction is processed in our office. For military that will be stationed out of state but have residence here we can take out of state insurance with copy of military identification card.(The photocopying of a military identification card or a common access card is illegal under Title 18, U.S. Code Part 1, Chapter 33, Section 701, however, government agencies can make copies in the interest of conducting official government business.)
  • Payment for registration and property tax fees-Bullitt County Clerk’s Office accepts Cash, Personal Check, Money Order or Certified Check. The office does accept Visa, MasterCard and Debit. However, to process using a Credit/Debit Card, an additional processing fee is charged. Contact county clerk’s office for details. Credit/Debit Cards cannot be used over the phone.

 

Military Personnel-Vehicles Purchased Overseas

If an individual serving in the United States military purchases a vehicle while stationed overseas, he or she shall title and register the vehicle within 30 days of moving to Kentucky.

The following documents and information is required:

  • Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration (TC 96-182)
  • Signed Foreign Title/Certificate of Origin or Original Foreign Registration
  • Inspection from Sheriff's Office
  • Current Proof Insurance
    • Commonwealth of Kentucky proof of insurance with the insurance company’s five-digit NAIC number listed on the card. The effective date of card cannot be greater than 45 days of the date transaction is processed in our office.   • Please be aware that any exemption that was provided at time of purchase will not apply when titling and registering in Kentucky. Owner will have to pay a 6% Usage Tax on the retail value of the vehicle. Please contact our office for transaction fee amounts.
